Ready to add some sunshine to your summer? Look no further than summer sunflowers! Not only do these cheerful blooms brighten your outdoor space, they're also highly beneficial for pollinators - which in turn is great for your Phoenix kitchen gardens!

Are you looking to create a stunning centerpiece for your next barbecue, want to add a touch of natural beauty to your backyard, or encourage more pollinators to visit? Growing sunflowers will help you achieve all of that and more!

I planted these beauties from seed on March 29th. Here are my PKG TIPS that will help you grow gorgeous summer sunflowers just like mine.

  • Sunflowers can be planted anytime from March to September here in Phoenix and its surrounding areas.

  • You can plant sunflowers near vegetable beds, but not in them.

  • Germination is aided by a 24 hour soak in warm water. This soak will help your sunflowers grow into beautiful plants whether you plan to sow directly or start your seeds indoors.

I plant sunflower seeds 1/2” deep in cell packs. When starting seeds inside, I use regular potting soil. Sunflower seedlings are usually ready to transplant outdoors within 10-14 days. I space them out every 4-6” - any closer and planted sunflowers will stay on the smaller side. I’ve also found that transplanting sunflowers can ‘stunt’ their growth. This usually makes for smaller heads as well.

Direct Seeding

I dig a 1/2” deep trench alongside my drip tape, and plant my sunflower seeds every 3 - 6" depending on variety. Cover with shade cloth in hotter months until you have true leaves. This helps retain moisture and protects your sunflowers against early against bird damage.
